HOW TO:
STEP 1: GET MY FREE PLAYFUL PENGUIN PRINTABLE
Get the free Playful Penguin Printable (Download Design #003) from my free resource library (get the password to the library in the form at the bottom of this post).
STEP 2: PRINT
Be sure to print all 3 pages onto regular printer or copy machine paper. Here’s what it will look like.

STEP 3: CUT THE PIECES OUT
Have your child cut each piece along the contour line – the outside edge of the shape. Sort the pieces according to the color of construction paper that you’ll need to trace it onto. Some of the pieces can be cut from the color of your choice so put them into their own pile. Remember to cut the eyes out too!

STEP 4: TRACE THE PIECES
Place each pattern piece on the appropriate color of construction paper. Trace around the outside edge using a regular pencil. If the resulting line is difficult to see, use a white colored pencil, white crayon or piece of chalk instead.

STEP 5: CUT THE PIECES OUT (AGAIN)
Once again, have your child cut each piece along the contour line – the outside edge of the shape. Sort the pieces according to color. Remember to cut the eyes out too!

STEP 6: BEGIN GLUING
Glue the largest white piece to the largest black piece. Arrange the eyes and beak pieces so that they look good to you then, glue those onto the face area. Attach both feet to the back of the body. Attach the wings to the back of the body also.

STEP 7: DECORATE SCARF AND HAT
Cut narrow strips of construction paper to about a 2″ (5cm) length. Glue them to the hat band, pom-pom, and scarf. Turn the piece over and trim narrow strips to the edge of the paper they are glued to. Turn the piece again so the right side is facing you (see picture) and decorate to your heart’s content. For the example, I used strips of green paper and punched holes out of orange and yellow paper.
The green knot in the scarf was made from a circle with a curve cut into it so it resembles a big, fat, letter “C”. (I did not make a pattern for that since it first came to mind as I was decorating the example. You could use a whole circle, a square or a rectangle shape here too.)
